Keeping the stories of Essex war vets alive
Canada has a long and proud history of peacekeeping and fighting for democracy. For generations, Canadian men and women have dedicated their lives to preserving fundamental rights and freedoms. Their efforts have laid a foundation for the open society that we continue to build and benefit from.
How can we repay these sacrifices and honour our veterans? One powerful way is by remembering and retelling their stories. I would like to promote a veterans’ storytelling project in my quarterly newsletter; to capture and share these valuable tales – but I need your help.
Community members are invited to submit a veteran’s story and photos. This storytelling project will hopefully cover a wide range of veterans’ experiences, including from the World Wars, Vietnam, Korea and Afghanistan, as well as other peacekeeping activities.
Submissions can be made at firstname.lastname@example.org. The deadline for submissions is September 23, 2016. Those stories not included in the newsletter will be posted on my website.
The end result of this story gathering process will be a community newsletter produced in time for Remembrance Day. Remembrance is a precious link to a receding past. It’s what allows history’s lessons to prepare us for future challenges.
Many have given their lives to the cause of peace. Please help me to tell our communities' stories by contributing to this newsletter.
