Statement on International Day of the Seafarer

On June 25, we recognize the International Day of the Seafarer. Also known as “sailors” or “merchant mariners”, seafarers work in the marine shipping sector, most often on commercial or merchant vessels.

Thousands of Canadians are employed by the Seafarers’ International Union of Canada. These seafarers proudly sail Canada’s waterways, and represent Canada internationally when visiting foreign ports.

This year’s theme for the Day of the Seafarer is "seafarers' wellbeing". By addressing the issue of seafarers' wellbeing – and particularly mental health – this campaign will inform seafarers of specific strategies available to them to tackle stress and other issues affecting their mental wellbeing – and widely disseminate the available tools to those affected.

The campaign will seek to highlight and showcase best practices and good examples but will also, inevitably, bring out areas of concern and examples of shortcomings.

To all seafarers from coast to coast to coast, I want to take this opportunity to state that your work is truly appreciated. Canadians are grateful for everything you do and are proud of the example you set on the international stage!
